A lot of content, mine included, talks about how to get more traffic, get more comments, or make more money, and though that’s great information, today I’d like to take a break by talking about something I feel is just as important, but doesn’t get the attention it deserves -
Blog Design !
When the Internet first started, it was OK to build ugly websites; that’s all there was. But now that the tools have improved and design is easier than ever before, the look of your website says more than it ever has. In fact, most people simply won’t tolerate…
A Bad Looking Website !
So for the purposes of this post, let’s assume that your blog is at least borderline ugly, if not horrifyingly disgusting. Heck, it’s possible that your blog looks bad and you don’t even realize it.
Let’s Fix it
Right now !
1. The Header is Your First Impression
Like it or not, people will judge your website within seconds of landing there. And as you can probably guess, the first thing that they see is the header. An ugly header doesn’t just say “get out of here,” it also screams unprofessional and even lazy. A simple header with a poor font selection isn’t good enough. I recommend paying a logo designer to build a nice looking header logo and accompanying graphic, but if you can’t afford that…
At Least Make the Effort to
Make it Look Nice !
If you don’t have a logo, then don’t use a bad one. Simply minimize the header space to let the rest of the content move up. If you do have a nice logo, then build the header to match, and make it look sharp. Use no more space than you need to, and only include pieces that look nice.
Everything Else
Can Be Thrown Away !
2. Image Alignment and Borders
Look, nothing says amateur more than an image that isn’t properly aligned in a blog post. Worse yet, don’t be that guy (or gal) that doesn’t understand how to properly resize images and ends up with skewed or distorted photos and graphics.
This is a No-Go !
Another thing you can do for an instant fix is to add an automatic border to your post images. To do this, simply find your style.css file (or equivalent) and type in the following:
img {border:2px solid #FFF;}
This will add a white, 2 pixel border around your images, which will make them look like they belong. If you want to change the color, simply adjust the “#FFF” to another. If you want black, it’s #000, grey: #CCC; etc.
These Simple Tweaks
Make a Huge Difference !
3. Font Size and Color
For some reason, many WordPress themes think to hard, and make text that is either too small or too light. I generally like to have a font size of at least 14 pixels, and a font color that is a sharp contrast from the page background. Check your stylesheet (or have a CSS guru help) to look for your font size and color and make sure that the text is legible. If it’s too small, then make it bigger; too light, then…
Make it Darker !
These might be difficult, or even expensive changes, depending on how good you are with CSS and Photoshop, but if you want to be considered a professional blogger, then your blog should resemble that.

It’s great to share and I;m having fun doing that…
hey Mavis, I found you here too
I guess header is as important as the head on our shoulders. Good impression lasts. Eye-contact. White teeth. Smile. The basics. Yet most people forget about them.
I’ve found blogs packing nothing but red-hot content yet their font seize was hurting the eye. We will do our visitors & readers a BIG service if we increase the seize of our text, and not give them head aches. I guess most people would not expect mini-fonts anyway, unless they visit a corporate web site.

Well… I’m not really an expert designer, so the above stuff are just simple ones but I do believe… even if they are simple.. still doing a little changes around them… may just be the answer to a great looking blog… and after going to your blog… I rather you put some money out and buy a premium theme such as the one I’m using… just a suggestion which might be the answer to your unhappiness of how your blog currently looks…
I was trying to avoid spending any more money at the moment. However, I guess if I really want something I need to be willing to spend the money. I will definitely look into the various premium themes out there. With your theme how did you go about editing the header to create your personalized banner?
Thanks for your suggestions!

My theme is a skin from thesis awesome and the theme itself is thesis skin, you can google “thesis theme” and read about the function of the theme, and if you do not know how to edit, there are two ways hire someone to do it for you which you can find in in warrior forum or you can use google and search for the question about the theme you have, I believe the best option is to hire someone from Warrior Forum, those web designer are cheap but they got the skill to do designing trust me…
well, indeed, the design matters because it helps you create your first impression. if I don’t like the design of a blog, i might not read it anymore, if it doesn’t have very good content. on the other hand, if a blog has a good design, I might keep reading it, even though it doesn’t have the best articles:)

Agree with your point that the header gives the first expression to a reader whether to continue reading further or not…. A text header with a cool font or an image looks nice

As an easier way of keeping the site clutter free, I’ve gone to using larger “ALT” tagged images that are relevant to the post’s topic.

Hey Badblogger,
Unfortunately people dont really care much about what you are if they do not have a good first impression of you.
And since they do not see you, the only thing they can do is check your blog out. if you disappoint with very poor blog layout, then the impression is formed.
Thanks for this lovely tips!
