Blogging is a tricky game, and regardless of what the A-listers tell you, it’s not as easy as it seems. The problem is that the learning curve is steep, and because of that, many new bloggers make mistakes that impede their progress. To help you get past those rookie mistakes, I want to talk about the…
7 Deadly Crimes of Blogging
As I See Them !
1. Bad Content
I know it sounds simple, but I beg you – don’t write bad content. I don’t care how great your blog looks, or which fancy widgets you’ve installed in the sidebar. If your blog content stinks, then it’s…
Game Over !
2. Instability
If you have a schedule, try to stick to it. If you don’t, then don’t feel like you have to. But beyond that, try not to waver in your content strategy. Don’t write about bananas if your blog is about mushrooms; well, unless you use mushroom compost to grow the bananas. You get my drift? Your content should be laser focused and refined to a point where people know exactly what they are going to get…
When They Visit Your Blog !
3. No Value
Your content should not only be written well, but it should provide value too. It doesn’t matter whether you are teaching, inspiring, or energizing, but make sure that you are doing something besides focusing on yourself, unless by doing that you provide value. Always put yourself in the shoes of the reader and ask…
“Can This Help Me ?”
4. Grammar Mistakes
Seriously, if you want to be a pro, you should act like a pro. There is simply no excuse for spelling or grammar mistakes in a professional publication. Check, and then re-check again.
Always Be Checking !
5. Whining
I know it seems like people like it, but really…they don’t. Don’t be the blogger that whines about not getting enough traffic, attention, or comments. Don’t post your sob story unless your blog is directly related to sob stories. Be brave, and be courageous, but…
Don’t Be a Whiner !
6. Over-selling
I can’t tell you how many bloggers I watched go down in flames because they never stopped selling. First, it was a sale, then it was a birthday sale, and next, well you get the drift. If you are broke, try not to act like it, and don’t beg for money. It just…
Doesn’t Look Good !
7. Flaming
I know, I know. In the past, I’ve told you to take issue with what other bloggers are saying, but that is different. Flaming is the act of going insane on a topic in a manner begotten of a TechCrunch troll. Be reasonable, and above all, don’t forget that new people are reading your blog every day, and it’s not nice to…
Scare the Neighbors !
I know I had a little fun with this post, but still, the message rings true. If you want to be a great blogger, then avoid these crimes like the plague. In doing so, you’ll cut your learning curve to pieces, and you’ll be an A-lister in…

Hi Wong,
I really enjoyed this post! I especially like your idea about avoiding “Sob Stories” – no one wants to read a sob story unless it has some type of victory or valuable lesson learned at the end.

Yes, you are right, no one wants a sob story, because it is nothing good but bad stuff that might heard our own mind… well unless it is something we learn at the back of the story…
Hi Wong!
I’ll admit of being guilty of #4. Not on my blog but on comments. It happened 2 times this week (I should be more careful).
Anyway, nice list! I think whiners and flamers are the worst of them all.

Yes, I feel guilty too for number 4, seriously, I always to my best to recheck what I wrote online, but sometime just like human being we tend to forget…
Well, whiners and flamers are worst but as worst as it is… there are some people who do succeed in being a whiner for some reason… seriously… and I do not know how, I did try to do it in the past… but it was terrible…
yup.. these are nice set of tips to avoid doing…
dont beg… i like this one and have seen many bloggers doing that, may be to buy their products their endorsing, signing up for their feeds etc etc

Yes, I had seen quite a lot, and even sign up for a mailing list where the author actually write what happen to his family because of some natural disaster and hope in the way we could help him…. dumb and seriously stupid….
You got me here
. I think 2nd and 4th is for me for sure but I would like to give excuse for them like a small kid lol . I am not a full time blogger and English is not my native language too . But I always do rechecking before I make my post go live for readers .

In terms of blogging, my biggest issue was “instability” but the main reason was that I was still working multiple jobs. Now that I have the time I am in the process of moving my blog over (and going to re-design/fix some elements soon)…Once this is done I definitely need to get on schedule. I follow several blogs and it’s really frustrating when there isn’t a new post for days or weeks!
I think over-selling is one of the reasons I haven’t been reading famousbloggers.net that much recently…Last year it only had about 20% of the ads and not a lot of those “selling” posts. Seems to be all about money making these days ;( I think it could be toned down a little bit…

Well.. I’m not sure about famousbloggers.net, but I’m pretty sure Hesham don’t promote stuff unless he think is a good buy.
Well, I do not have that option, and I only uses “Comment Reply Notification” plugin so to let the commentator to know I had reply to him or her…
