Bloggers love getting comments and replies, and though many of the A-list bloggers don’t reply to them, there are several (like me), that love responding to comments. To me, getting even just a single comment is an honor and…
I’m Proud to Have People
Commenting Here !
The problem with blogging replies is that many bloggers looks boring in the way they reply to their commentators. Here are 7 types of replies I see that makes you look boring:
1. Single Sentence Replies
I get that you don’t have a lot of time (actually, you do, but you pretend you don’t), but if you’re going to reply to a comment, take some time to reply with some substance. Sure, the person leaving the comment might not have given you something to work with, but this is why you are paid the big bucks -
Take it Up a Notch !
2. Missing the Point
Make sure you understand the comment completely before replying, because I’ve seen it all too often when a blogger replies to a comment, thinking they are making sense, but sounding like they either didn’t read the comment or…
Just Couldn’t
Interpret it !
I often read a comment, go back and read the part of my post that they referenced in order to understand the context of that comment, and then reply. This gives me time to remember what I wrote, and…
Ponder the Original Thought !
3. Saying the Same Thing, Again and Again
It’s hard to be original, but you have to try. Don’t use copy/paste replies like some 80/20 Tim Ferriss obsessed cultist trying to maximize productivity so you can drink Yerba Mate all day. Just be real, and try to be original.
It’s Not Hard !
4. Not Replying Consistently
It sounds obvious, but if you start responding to comments, and then stop, it makes people feel like you don’t give a shit, and they start wondering why you aren’t replying. This is not the message you want to send, so either reply to most, or…
None at All !
5. Not Replying at All
Of course, not replying at all makes you look like a hypocrite, because you’re probably preaching community values, social connection, and reader love, but not actually following your own advice. There’s nothing worse than dishing out medicine…
You Don’t
Take Yourself !
6. Replying With a Link
Don’t hate someone because they haven’t wasted their day reading through your archives and ended up asking a question on a topic you’ve written before. As someone, this has happened to…
I Hate it !
Yes, it takes time, but that’s why you are here; give someone the decency of a real reply, not a link to another post that they can read in order to…
Get an Answer !
7. Thanks for Commenting
I’m sorry, but this is just dumb. Sure, you’re happy to have comments, but thanking them for their comment is both a cop-out and a worthless phrase. They probably don’t believe you anyway, especially since you’re dishing out fluff in…
Your Own
Comment Section !
So those are my 7 types of reply that looks boring, what are yours? Do you even agree with these? Have you fallen into this trap yourself? Let’s talk about it in the comments -
I Promise
Not to Be Boring !
Stay Exciting and Fun,

Hear hear! I must say (since we’ve been going back on forth on comments – you and I), that if I get a worthless comment like ‘great site!’, or ‘where do I find the RSS feed to this blog?’ [Um, in the post at the bottom – or in the sidebar),… sometimes it just seems like spam and I don’t bother replying.
However, if you leave a thoughtful comment, even if it’s a one-liner, I don’t mind replying at all. But if you didn’t put effort into your comment don’t expect me too. What do you think?

Actually, I don’t mind one sentence, if it’s meaningful and reasonable, I will reply too, but like you say, whether or not a commentator had put in any effort, we can see it, by just reading it, so I will do the same as you.

Hi, Wong.
Sexy and captivating, yes you are. But, boring, never. That is why I never regretted visiting you here after reading about your blog over at Ileane’s. Although you might have photos and sometimes content that may not agree with my sensibilities, I admire your courage to write that way and admit that you always add a refreshing twist to things.
Like this post, for example. There are times when list posts also get boring but your is not because of the short but meaty directives you dish out at the end of every point.
In answering the comments to my blog, I always make sure that my commentators know of my sincerity and appreciation. I may not deliver the best replies there are, but I reply to every comment left on my posts and make sure that they are in line to what is in the comment.

Thanks for your compliment, recently I just read a post that wrote about list post are boring and I comment and told the author, it is not the list is boring, it is the writer… and that is why you never get bore with my list post, though I do not claim I’m as good as Copyblogger, but at least I’m that good at writing stuff that doesn’t bored the shit out of my readers…
But anyway, I too always do my best to reply to comments that make sense and also meaningful just like the one you give and for those type of so called “low quality comment”… well… I will just reply in “low quality” because sometime is hard to even reply to those “low quality” comment.

I get what you mean, but even those comments that sometimes don’t make sense, I try to make sense of them to be polite.
I think, I’m just wired that way.

Hey there,
Just discovered your blog and I’m already a fan
I’m a beginner blogger, just starting out, and I am absolutely thrilled to receive comments of any kind! I try to be myself and reply as If I am talking to the person face to face. I’m happy to have motivated someone to comment, so I’ll more than happy to invest in a good, real reply.

Well, it’s a great feeling receiving a few comments but, you should also control on how you receive, don’t get into the feeling about having a great numbers of comment, always make sure each and every single comment you get are real and make sense to what you are posting and delete those that just spam around, and you will be able to reply to comments that are real and good, that is the time can make friends and also communicate just like talking to a friend.

Oh and welcome to my damn blog!

Hi Wong,
I think number two is sometimes tricky but it gets really tough when the commenter did not get the point of the article and gives you a snubby comment. Do you sometimes not approve a post when the commenter is completely ignorant just to not show their stupidity publicly?
I do think any decent answer can have a link in it, but that’s my view. I agree just a link is a no no but referring to a great place of wisdom is never bad.

Well… if the link is valuable then I think is okay, but if the link sucks… well I’m sure you know what that means, and if that happens… no use hanging around the blog.

Hey Wong,
Your post was amazing, man!
I completely agree with you (although I have done some of the things that you mentioned in the post- like thanking the commentators and not replying consistently). Every point that you arose in your post is important. Everything needs to be taken care of, if you actually want to get the benefits of commenting and blogging.
Thank you for the post,

Well, in the past I reply to every damn comment but now I don’t unless I had something to reply… I will reply or else, I will just approve the comment and leave it as it is…

Yikes! I am totally guilty of responding at random.
Sometimes I just run through and approve, spam and trash a ton of them at once.
I know, I know…not very personal.
I will do better Mr. Wong…;)

Will, just make sure you do not respond randomly because not just I didn’t like, I bet you didn’t like to if I respond to you randomly, so it’s best to reply to someone when you really want have something to say because that will make every reply of yours a great conversation that will eventually build up a great relationship.

I think editing the comments correctly is an important thing on any blog. When choosing to post anything in the comments (whether publishing a user comment or replying yourself), it is important to ask whether it actually adds anything to the post.
People are only going to read the comments if the opinions extend what has been written above. If not, you are best not having comments at all.

Ya, is better not to comment or reply if you have nothing to say, nowadays, I only reply when I need to just like this one because you make a meaningful comment and I had to reply back a meaningful reply, that is how conversation can be interesting.

Hi Wong,
Here are my 3 favorites of poor, worst and boring comments that I hate to get.
1.”Thanks”
2.”Very Nice.”
3.”I recently came across your blog and have been reading along. I thought I would leave my first comment. I don’t know what to say except that I have enjoyed reading. Nice blog. I will keep visiting this blog very often. Bl.a. Bl.a…..

Hey Wong,
This is my first time to your blog and I was a bit surprised when I got here. Wow!!! Lots and lots of scantly clad ladies here. My oh my..
I’ll agree with the majority of what you said but my friend, I ALWAYS thank my commenters for leaving me a comment. Why? Because I really do appreciate that they took the time to come over to my place and share their thoughts on my post. If that makes me boring than so be it. I honestly don’t believe that’s the case though.
For those people who leave me one liners, the majority of the time they are spammers anyway and I just delete their comment. If they are someone who visits me a lot and maybe didn’t have time for a decent comment, I forgive them. Hey, it happens to us all I suppose.
But I will agree with you on the majority of these. Why comment if you aren’t going to take the time to really read the post! I know I’ve had my moments but I sure hope they haven’t been often.

Well, some comment are just copy of sentence in my post, usually even if I know the commenter, I still will never reply, unless I really need to tell him or her something… Nowadays I delete lots of comment that is one liner without any thoughts or related to the post, and now with GASP plugin, most of the time the comment I get are just awesome for the reason I don’t need to worry about all the damn spammers anymore…

Everybody should get the taste of their own medicine.
I make substantial replies for those who made an effort and thought before they wrote anything. Also, I sometimes take time to answer those one-liners with a one-line reply. Not really sure why I do that.
You know what happens now? I really want to praise the post because I truly like it and I don’t because I don’t want to sound spammy!
I hate that a simple act of kindness is now often misinterpreted because of those damn spammers.

Well, though I know the one-liner is not spam, and I will approve it, but I never reply… unless the one liner is that good that I need to reply in order to show my appreciation, but I still prefer something I can reply about, just like the comment you make makes me want to reply you in a quick fashion

Wong Chendong aka The Bad Blogger recently posted..Is Google +1 the Future of Marketing Or Just Another Opportunity for Bad Business?
The single sentence, ‘thanks for sharing’ type comments really irritate me. I don’t know why it is so hard to atleast read the article and surely have something interesting to say about it that can perhaps lead to a good discussion with the blogger? I feel if they cannot add anything to the topic being discussed, they should not even comment on it, period.

Well, when I read a comment, I know who is truly my reader of this blog, and I’m sure you had read my post and comment, those the never read are those that leave a short comment which I usually do not reply unless, I really got something to say.

Great advice all to often people think just cause they add a one liner that they are paying attention to their readers, I have found many people who are great at responding to their readers and those who are really bad, i think you make a good example as well as N. Patel.
