Social media appeared like a knight and shining armor, ready to usher us to a place of marketing bliss – at least that’s what they wanted us to believe.
Though social media can be fantastic, let’s try to keep it real and avoid the hype that the modern day evangelists use to keep us believing that all we need to do in order to get traffic is to…
Tweet a Few Times and
Create a Facebook Fan Page !
Today, I want to share 5 social media tips that actually work.
1. Monitor Mentions of You, Your Products, and Your Services
The first thing you should be doing with social media is not Tweeting or Facebooking, but using search.Twitter.com to create and save searches based on…
You,
Your products, and
Your Services !
For instance, I might set searches for Bad Blogger, badblogger or #badblogger. Should I create an ebook, I’ll save a search for it’s title and several variants. If people offer feedback, they won’t always be using an @ reply, so use Twitter search to see what people are really saying. If they aren’t saying anything, then…
It’s Time to Change that !
2. Help People
If you want to find customers and leads on Twitter or Facebook, then search for people that need help and offer it to them. This is how Gary Vaynerchuk built his wine business, and…
Look At Where He’s At Today !
On Twitter, search for things like “how to…” and on Facebook, join groups and pages to see where you can lend a hand. This is a great way to build good will. Eventually, people will start coming to visit your blog and if you’re good…
They’ll Follow and Subscribe !
3. Connect People
Forget about using social media to pitch and instead focus on how you can help connect people to each other. Connect buyers with sellers, marketers with creators, and readers with writers.
Connect, Connect, Connect !
When you get good at this, people will start to see you not as a bloodthirsty marketer, but as a true asset to their social network.
4. Respond to Customers
Make sure that people know your Twitter/Facebook URL’s and have them contact you with any problems, whether for a free or premium product. Knowing that they can reach you instantly, people will be more likely to ask for help than vent, which means you can cut them off before they start…
Badmouthing
Your Products and Services !
As long as you are listening, you should be able to at least minimize customer service issues, complaints, and refunds.
5. Educate
I’ve said it about three times already, but social media isn’t a place to pitch. Instead of thinking of your followers as customers, think about them as students. Use your social media outlets to try and out-teach your competition. If you do this, you’ll build credibility and authority, which will help you convert…
Real Customers !
So that’s it.

That’s great way to communicate with your readers, well done.
I only make use of Facebook to give me the edge of traffic I want and its mainly from my friends. I’ve created one FB page although its not getting that much attention though. And as of Twitter, I’m gonna have to follow your advice
Actually I am getting no traffic from Twitter since . I’m gonna have to try it out

Well, if you are getting traffic from Facebook then you should focus more to get more traffic from it. As for twitter, it’s best to start communicating rather then start posting link, try to get around and soon you can start posting links back to your blog for traffic.
Haha .. actually its what I am doing .. ALthough there are those days when my friends got bored and somewhat tired of clicking the link.

Ya, I agree with you too, stuff like replying and communicating in regular basis does improve anyone’s social media effort, so having you been doing it regularly, is your results increasing in traffic to your site?
No big traffic but yes they are connected with me via gtalk and twitter and we reply each other queries on regular basis. If you make any blog post and it is useful then most friends will help you to promote it in different social network. So it is just a friend circle helping each other and keep giving new suggestions for improvements.

Yes, both are great and they are really good in terms of traffic flow, if you use it well…
I definitely agree about looking at your customers less as just plain customers and more like students. Or, rather, as anyone other than “just a customer” that you want to reach out to like a real person and help to educate, to add value to their lives, and all-around just offer to help and serve them.

That’s a really nice way to approach social media, but of course being good sometime will will get you into trouble as there are people who might take advantage of your service, which is why when using social media there is a limit in how much you can help, so is best to do what you can at a limit and if anyone wants more help they will have to either pay you and better promote you in a exchange for a help.

Hi Wong,
Social Media or Networking sites are for creating strong relationships. If you really able to do that then your followers or fans certainly use your services when they need it. As a business your purpose for using Social Media is to tell them that you offer certain type product or service which is available at reasonable cost and you provide best services.

Ya, nowadays big boss business such as Sony does use social media quite well to promote their newest product and using social media to answer question and finding feedback from customers.
Social media to me has always been a viable networking platform both professionaly and personally, and a lot of business has come from social media for me.

No problem, and thanks for coming by reading and commenting….
Speaking of the search function from Twitter, I have a few searches saved, and I use a twitter app to constantly update me whenever a new instance of the search appears. It searches every 20 seconds for updates, and will update me on my desktop, its really useful I’ve gained a few followers by simply helping them out when no one else would, and I did it fast.

Monitoring your mentions is essential! It’s fine to spend time sending out Tweets and other messages, but what’s really valuable is what others are saying about you.

Yes that is the best way to deal with the social media. Make your product/service/brand more personal. And not use it to pitch your stuff to people. Most people if they smell a salespitch coming up they will go around you in a bow. Even if they would actually be interested in your product, they will never know because they don’t want to be sold to.
