You probably heard it all the way through school:

“Get Good Grades So You Can Get into College,
So You Can Get Better Grades, and Get a Great Job !”

Maybe your parents harped on you too, or friends and family. It doesn’t really matter where it comes from, because the pressure to go to school and get good grades is something embedded in our society.

But it Shouldn’t Be !

According to Peter Thiel, one of the Paypal co-founders who’s actually paying the best and brightest to drop out of college and start companies say we are in an education bubble. It’s not that college is now overpriced, though it is, or that it won’t guarantee you a good job, and it won’t, it’s that merely asking about the validity of college is seen as an…

Absolute Sin !

“Education may be the only thing people still believe in in the United States. To question education is really dangerous. It is the absolute taboo. It’s like telling the world there’s no Santa Claus.”

From Techcrunch: http://techcrunch.com/2011/04/10/peter-thiel-were-in-a-bubble-and-its-not-the-internet-its-higher-education/

This is especially true for people like you and I, who are entrepreneurs at heart, and who earn our eduction not in a classroom, but in the trenches. Inspired by Peter, and the thousands of bloggers out there making magic happen, I wanted to share six reasons why…

You Can Pay Someone Else to Do
Without Spending A Fortune !

6.  Build Good Debt Not School Debt

Many people leave college with tens of thousands of dollars in debt, and spend their next 5-10 years paying it off. What could you do if you invested that same amount of money in your business, instead of learning about things…

You’ll Never Use Again ?

So with this, I’ll leave you a simple question: if you have a college degree, do you believe it helped you with your business? If not, do you think it will get in your way?

If you think is worth it, I’m not saying you should but if you have a plan, you might as well drop out and start building your business, but of course, if you are studying something you definitely will use in the future then there is no stopping of you to continue your college, if not… don’t waste your precious time, I mean if I were to go back to by school days, I will rather drop out early and start learning to sell in the real world then playing in school, but what the hell… I never thought of that at that age….:(

Well, I’m not really successful yet, though I’m moving nearer and nearer to my goal, but I believe success is a process that will never end, I mean there will always be a bigger goal in the future.
And hopefully in the future we could meet up in a seminar or an event… who knows… you could be as successful as me… :)

I did attend college, but I know that college it not for everyone. I definitely agree with you in regards to the debt issue. The cost of college these days is just out of control. Not to mention you will probably have to spend your first two years taking your school’s general education requirements which will likely have nothing to do with your major or interests. In today’s economy, degree or no degree it is likely not going to save you from being laid off.

Agree with you, nowadays even with a degree doesn’t really guarantee you could find a job that really pay well, I mean if you had a degree in IT, you still need to work your ass off for a couple of years before you can get promoted to a higher position in the company and this also does guarantee that you will be promoted too… and worst… nowadays there are so many foreign workers coming in… and getting a job is almost like you had to fight for it… So are you a drop out too?

Absolutely, we don’t need a degree to be success especially on the internet. You just need to observe and learn, and find out what make people success and learn from mistake, eventually you’ll be another successful internet marketer who without any degree.

Google is teacher and we can actually get everything that we want to learn.

Well, it’s great to hear there’s someone just like me – drop outs, surely the internet is more efficient in learning stuff, that we cannot learn in school especially building business, I mean those teachers in school teaching you business or marketing don’t know what they are talking because they aren’t entrepreneur but a school teacher holding a job and getting paid a salary….

Reply

John July 1, 2011 at 5:59 am

I didn’t drop school, but I must agree that information is free and very easily accessible! I must admit that I learned more by myself than from school because of 2 reasons: by myself I can learn stuff that I really need and if you learn easier if you do it because you want to.

I agree with “good grades = good job”. But if you have an entrepreneur heart that’s not enough, you have to learn things yourself!

Of course education can help us to become a successful person, but don’t count on it because the percentage is low, I mean don’t take the risk if you have no confident to face the worst which is “waste time on college” and in the end found out that “it didn’t help” you to become an achiever.
Although, business had it’s risk, but at least the risk is something you can plan and prepared but education is something you can plan but you can’t prepared because who knows if you can find a decent job on the street?

Mark Zuckerberg, Steve Jobs and Bill Gates succeded without having a college degree because they had a passion which they followed from an early age, but that doesn’t mean that if you have a passion for something you will necessarily succed, i guess it takes a bit of luck too.

It is not necessary to have a college degree to be successful online entrepreneur. Statistics shows that a lot of people, who have managed to succeed in business don’t have a college degree. The most important for an entrepreneur it is to be motivated and always move forward on the way to success.

Hi Bad Blogger!

That’s a really nice post you got there. Actually, i’m not against on what your saying, I even reflect and realize the fact on what your talking about. I remember Robert Kiyosaki while I’m reading your post, the author of the book “Rich Dad, Poor Dad”, have you read it? I’m a Network Marketer and at the same time, I have a Nurse degree. It’s true, we can’t learn how to deal with clients just by studying theories. It should be experienced. But when you have a degree, it’s a plus. You won’t be considered as ignorant. We can’t deny the fact that traditionally, old people still believes that education is the key, not realizing the rate of unemployment right now.

You should post more about this topic and share this to people. This might open the minds of some population.=)

What you said is true. We don’t need a college degree to be successful. I was not able to graduate from college but whenever I meet my classmates who graduated and talk about their earnings, it shows that I earn alot more than most of them. I go to other countries more often than they do.

A person does not need to be school smart. Being street smart is all that’s needed to earn a lot of money.

I’d always say that there is no point forcing people to study if they aren’t suited to it or just don’t want to be there.

I’d also hope that many people pursue an academic course for reasons other than “success”. Surely you need to be at least interested in what you are learning!

The time I spent at University was some of the best years of my life, met some amazing friends (and a wife!), studied an amazing subject, and learnt a number of valuable lessons before entering the “real world”!

Do it because you want to, not because you feel you have to.

If I had to do it all over again, I would just have gotten my English degree (which I obtained in the 80s) and left it at that. I foolishly went back to university in the late 90s to get a psychology degree and then recently graduated with an MSW. I know – dumb. A TOTAL WASTE OF MONEY, as there are no jobs available to new graduates.

Although I did get a scholarship (thank God), I have gone through all my savings just in order to live, and currently only work part-time in the very same industry in which I started decades ago- retail. I am looking for a full-time job in any field. I cannot turn back the clock, but I have learned valuable life lessons. I have a positive attitude and feel that all is not lost. I am a hard worker and very entrepreneurial. I have a very good attitude about getting older, so age does not bother me. I am going to work my way up into retail management (again) and take an extra job on the side. The pay is not great, but I learned to be very good at saving and investing, and living below my means. “Save” and “Invest” are now my middle names.

I could have done all of this with only a high school education, and it really hurt to see my money dwindle away. However, when I was growing up, it was really drilled into us that one must have a degree to succeed. For many people, this is simply not true. It took me too many years to finally realize this.

I should also mention that eventually I will start working for myself!

It is absolutely true that you don’t need a college degree to be successful as an entrepreneur.
But if you want to get a normal job then a degree can help you get a foot in the door.
I’ve written resumes professionally and clients without a degree better have some interesting work experience or else it is a lot of work to make it look good to the potential employer.

And if you want to start your own business then it doesn’t hurt to go to business school for a while. At least you will learn to write a business plan.
But there is nothing you can’t learn without school.

If anyone want to learn business, the best place to go is the seminar, no doubt, because that’s where you get real life experience from real businessman and women who had make millions…

You believe of having a college degree is the key to success, well… how many of them you know around you did become successful?
If you ever said college degree is the key to success, do you know how many people will laugh at you, what I mean is you are believing a piece of paper will turn you life around, have you ever read the book “Rich Dad, Poor Dad” if you had yet to read, I urge you to buy and read it.
Because in reality, college degree is just something you achieve, so that you can find a job where you are going to work until you are old and retire. I know is hard to accept reality but sometime we just had to face it even if it sucks :(

But even if you do have a great business scheme or are super talented with computers and I.T, It’s always good to have a backup plan just in case things don’t work out as expected. Also to add to this, some jobs wont take you without a college degree these men such as bill gates were businessmen or started their business’s from scratch but what about the people who aren’t business orientated? They will not land the best jobs then, they wont land a job such as Doctors, Lawyers, veterinarian and more. I couldn’t go to college; not because my family didn’t have money, it’s because they didn’t believe in me and wouldn’t fill out required forms so that I could enroll. without FASFA you are not allowed to enroll till you are 24. By that time it just seemed like a pipe dream. I am glad I overcame what my folks thought about me and I did it by myself.

When you’re at school all you hear from the teachers it:
“What you gonna without school, work at McDonalds?”
“You wanna quit school? So what, you gonna become a street cleaner?”
For them all that counts is education, because that’s all they know about. If I were to see my old teachers again, I’d just lough at their faces, because they still work their ass off 8 hours a day, where I just relax and still make more money then them.
