7 Twitter Mistakes You Should Dump Right Away!

I’m going to be honest – the term social media drives me nuts. Maybe it’s that the social media consultants ruined it for me, or just that social media isn’t as special as people think it is, but I think…

The Term Sucks !

Today I want to lay the groundwork for what I believe to be an important business lesson, which is that nothing new will fail to become old, and as an entrepreneur, you have to learn to manage the hype before…

Adopting Any New Strategy
As a Way of Life !

It’s because of the early adopters and their fanatical evangelism that I have to write this anyway, but here’s the deal – these are things they say you should do, or that they’ve enabled you to do through various tools, that you should stop doing…

Like Now !

1.  Auto-DM

There’s a lot of back and forth about this. Some say it’s OK and a great way to introduce yourself to people. Others say that it’s annoying and spammy.

I Agree With the Latter !

It started because a tool made it fancy, but Twitter has been trying to stop it, and for good reason – it’s bad business! Save the autoresponders for email, and stop annoying people with your…

Spammy Auto-DM’s !

2.  Twitter Chat

These hashtag chats are catching on like wildfire, and though I can see the value from a business getting strategy, the truth is that they are likely to annoy more people than they attract. Save your #blogchat for…

3.  RT’ing Compliments

Come on! A compliment should be received with humility, not as a way to brag to the rest of your followers to talk about…

How Awesome

4.  Ignoring People

I know it’s cool to pretend that you’re too special for your audience, but it makes you look like a jerk. Twitter shouldn’t be…

A Megaphone !

5.  Auto-Spam

Nothing worse than Tweeting about an iPhone and getting a hundred tweets from people about getting a free iPad. We know it’s a scam, so…

Just Stop it !

6.  Tweeting About Your Post 10 Times

If you Tweeted twice and people didn’t read it, they probably won’t read it after the, 3rd, 4th or 10th tweet. You look pathetic when you do this.

Stop Begging

7.  Talking About “My Tribe”

Seth Godin made the Tribe concept a neat thing to talk about, but unfortunately everyone seems to think they now have a tribe. Don’t talk about me like I’m some sort of sheep in your flock just because…

Hi Wong!

I agree with 6 of the above 100%. :)

The only one I don’t necessarily agree with is #6, and the only reason I say this, is that you can tweet about a blog post 10 times, within the span of 30 days and it wouldn’t be obnoxious. Tweets are incredibly rapid, especially if you’re following over 1,000 people. I miss a lot of tweets and blog posts and I actually like that people re-tweet their posts.

On another note, I think Twitter should do away with DM’s all together. All they’re used for now is spam. Just get rid of ‘em!

Neat post!

Thanks Morgan for coming by reading and commenting on my blog, anyway as for number 6 I’m actually referring to a single post being tweet multiple times in a day not a month, if it’s a month, that’s okay for me. Sorry if my post did not explain properly about a day or month, hope you understand…

Ooooh! Then yes, that definitely makes sense and I agree! =)

I have the same thoughts as Morgan, but for number 6 I think it’s tolerable to tweet a single post at most twice in a day.

My rationale for this is mostly about time-zone differences. I mean you shouldn’t be damned for tweeting once in the morning and another in the evening for a single post right? Just so that your followers from the other side of the world can see your update easier. Just my two cents here, nothing more. :)

#3 drives me crazy too! No one cares! I wouldn’t be surprised if those comments are actually sent from a secondary account the person has made solely for the purpose of creating such crap tweets.

Any way, thanks for coming by reading and commenting. Talk soon…

Yes, I agree with most of your points, I was just messing with you. I really get bothered by people how use auto direct messages. On the other hand retweeting your older posts once in a while it’s fine as far as I’m concerned.

I only spotted this post because you asked to make sure it was ok to use my picture (thank you for asking) and I love all of them – except I have a bit of an issue with number 4… I frequently ignore people not as a ego-building choice but just because there are so many other presses on my time that ‘social media’ contact from strangers easily takes a back seat to. Thus I ignore out of necessity… your list should acknowledge that reality for many as well and not just throwing a bunch of innocent tweeters under the bus. Love the pic by the way. ;-)

I was searching for a photo using the keyword Dumpster and your photo came out on the first page of the search in deviantart. And it immediately took my attention most probably because there was a sexy girl in the middle of the dumpster, but thanks for approving me for using your photo, though I do like it very much.
Anyway, #4 is just my personal view to what I had experience in twitter, but I think… either way, there is always a reason for it. But still I prefer to reply rather then ignore….
Oh and thanks for visiting my blog, reading and commenting, it’s nice to know you.

Ya, ur right, though to be honest I don’t really communicate much in twitter nowadays because of too much stupid tweet that actually bores me out, but still I do reply and comment on certain tweet, and hopefully this post will be retweet to as many tweeter user as possible.
Anyway, I’m still looking for something that could actually see who had retweet my post, if you have any solution to that, it will be great to know…

#4 annoys me the most. If you tweet or send DM to somebody and don’t get reply, I think that is quite irritating. #3 is also annoying. Re-tweeting your own compliments shows how crazy you are to get attention, but in reality it causes people to avoid you.

Wong, I’ve gotta ask, how is a hashtag chat or #blogchat any different from chats in your stream that don’t include you. I mean twitter is where you socialize in real-time. People chat. Is the fact that there’s a hashtag within the tweet that makes it annoying? I sat in on my first #chat a few nights ago. (My twitter account is almost a year old) Within that hour, I tweeted about 10 times. If I weren’t in the chat I may have tweeted more or less depending on the conversations I got involved in. How are hashtag chats and just chatting different? And if we shouldn’t be chatting at all, then what are we suppose to be doing?

In the marketing world there’s a way to socialize in twitter and what you have say is for personal usage which to me is all normal, but if you are trying to use your twitter account to do marketing then you should be doing marketing rather then chatting…

Reply

Vanita July 11, 2011 at 3:33 am

I guess it all depends on who you’re marketing to. I appreciate what you’re saying from a corporate standpoint though. I personally don’t follow corporations. It’s the small business owners that hire me, people who are just like me, and so I use twitter to build relationships. Building relationships, for me, is chatting with those in my network. Those in my network have referred me to many local clients, though I never mention my services. (I don’t even have a services page.) I haven’t had downtime in 6 months.
BTW, installing the tweetmeme button will show you who’s re-tweeted your posts. I’ve found that clicking the tweet count bubble will take me to tweetmeme and show me a list.

I see the point, Wong.

However, Twitter is my largest referral traffic generation source and all thanks to an auto DM I send to my new followers.

It just depends on what the message says… Is it about you or them?

Well, the message itself does makes the difference. but who was it send to is another story, I do not count on DM, it is almost a numbers game which is a 50/50 kind of thing.
I rather use a social medium that focus on certain niche to get traffic rather then using a 50/50 method, though you might have a way to do it, may be you can direct me on how you do it using DM…
