We’re all dumb when we start out as a blogger. We believe all kinds of crazy ideas that so-called gurus and professionals feed us on their own blogs and videos.
But the reality is, what those gurus and professionals tell us is actually not for beginners. They say you can make money from your blog, even if you know nothing. It’s like telling you to write English without knowing the alphabet. Sounds dumb, right?
Yup. But it happens. So, to help you keep an eye out for them, here are 10 dumb ideas we once believed:
1. AdSense Can Really Make Money
AdSense really can make money if you have a million visitors to your blog every day. If you don’t, you’ll barely make a dollar with your paltry few hundred visitors.
Here’s something you should know: At least 90% of the people out there who talk about making money by using AdSense are liars and scammers.
2. SEO is the Top Traffic Source
There are too many lies about SEO in the blogosphere. Some SEO services even guarantee that they can make your site the top result for any keyword search. So why is their own site buried on page 12 of the results list for the keywords ‘’SEO Service”?
Here’s something you should know: The best SEO I know in this world is Google. There is no such thing as SEO expert, guru or professional.
3. PPC is the Fastest Traffic Source
The truth is, PPC really is the fastest traffic source, but unless you have the money and the knowledge to calculate how much you must spend to earn a given ROI, you’ll probably spend more money than you make.
PPC is for seasoned bloggers and marketers only. As a beginner, you should keep your hands off it until you know how the game is played.
4. Renting Advertising Space is a Great Idea
This is slightly better than PPC, because at least you’re not competing for position. As long as you rent a space, your ad will be in the spot you rented until your payment period is up.
The problem is advertising space on an authoritative blog is expensive. Don’t waste your money and time until you know how advertising works.
5. You Need to Publish Content Every Day
I had said this many times, but I’ll say it again: Unless you’re a gushing fountain of valuable knowledge about your niche, then you shouldn’t publish daily. One good post per week is more than enough. Quality is always superior to quantity.
6. Content Re-Writing Software is Awesome
This type of software has been around for many years. To use it, you plug an article into the program and program re-writes the piece for you.
The problem is, software tend to be a lousy writer. Sentences rewritten by computer programs don’t read very smoothly. At worst, the programs produce nothing but mangled, garbled English and make the article difficult to read and understand.
7. Place Affiliate Links Everywhere
Inserting affiliate links throughout your blog is like spreading manure on the floor. Do you like walking on a floor full of shit?
Surely, the answer is no. But I still see bloggers doing it, hoping to make money from the affiliate links. The problem is, how many people will actually buy through your link? You’re probably just wasting time.
8. Issue Praise in the Comments Section
Ten years ago, I saw people doing it. Ten years later, I still see them doing it. Trust me, they’ll keep doing it until the Internet explodes or melts down or otherwise disappears.
Don’t waste your time praising online content or the author of said content. Nobody gives a damn about praise these days. The only thing they give a damn about is how to stop you from cluttering the comments section with your praise.
9. Use Commenting Software
Commenting software is getting better and better. Sometimes it even generates a good comment. But how good is it, really? It’s just a bot.
Nowadays, if you want to comment, you need to tick a box to prove that you’re human. If that box doesn’t get ticked, your comment will go straight to the spam section.
10. Share Content Every 5 Minutes on Your Social Network
It’s good practice to share your content on your social network(s). But sharing the same content every 5 minutes will not only piss off your friends – it will piss most people off.
Unless you are sharing real money every 5 minutes, you will be considered a spammer. This will destroy your reputation. Don’t do it.
